Lieutenant-Colonel Jean Valliere is the commander of the United Nations Security Force, Persephone and a former hero of the Russo-Chinese War?.
An artillery officer from an early age in the European Union military, Valliere served with the European artillery at the Battle of Seoul, 2717?, when the Euro-Russian line threatened to collapse and defeat seemed imminent. A mere captain at the time, Valliere was forced to take command of almost the entire European artillery by the massacre of senior European officers that marked the opening stage of the battle.
However, Valliere proved more than up to the challenge thrust onto his plate. His exhortations and his tactical cunning, in spite of a near-critical lack of information and near-total abandonment as the Europeans threatened to rout, slowed the Chinese down enough that reinforcements were able to arrive and stabilise the situation. Coming out of the battle Valliere was lauded as a hero and granted every medal his remaining superiors were entitled to give him. He was also popularly nicknamed le Sang-Froid, the Cold-Blooded, for his utter cool in the face of fire.
Valliere's career largely stalled, in spite of his high public profile, in the post-war army. He was handed begrudging promotions and was a lieutenant-colonel by 2737, but his outspoken nature and association with a war most brass would rather see forgotten contributed to his professional inertia.
Fortunately, the United Nations came along to rescue Valliere: they needed a commander for the new security force being raised for the colony of Persephone. The assignment was prominent but not prestigious, held little prospect of glory, and required a skilled, independent commander whose superiors would still be glad to see him go.
Valliere was the only real candidate for the command.
